  • I asked my advisor for a letter of recommendation for my PhD programs that I'm applying for. This was his response:

"I am willing to write a letter of recommendation that contains my
judgements of both your strengths and weaknesses as a potential PhD
student. As I said to you when we briefly discussed this in the fall,
I am surprised that you are applying to do a PhD. This is not because
you lack the intellectual ability or lab skills (you have both to a
high level)  but because you seem to lack the motivation and desire
to work at the high level necessary to complete a first-rate PhD
thesis project. But this is just my perception, and I am willing to
grant I may be wrong and it is quite possible that you may find a
more suitable and inspirational fit elsewhere in terms of both
    project and supervisor.

Please let me know if you still wish me to write letters and if so by
what date. I ask that you give me about 2 weeks warning."
