Month: August 2003

  • I always feel vaguely guilty when I turn on the air conditioning. Like, as an ecologist, that I should be able to just suck it up and live with the heat and the humidity without even a fan. Ha. And then I WAKE UP.

I adore air conditioning. It is second only to indoor plumbing on my list of things that I am really glad humans invented. There is no pleasure, no rapture like that of a hot shower and cold air conditioning in August.

I’m a rampant consumer. So sue me.

I went riding on go-cart type deals on Sunday. E. and I raced many times. Sadly, I must report that I am a bit of a reckless driver on the enclosed courses. I caused two accidents and ended up spun out into the wall both times. Ah well.

I also re-learned the fact that I blow at Putt-Putt.

I turned in my first draft of my proposal. I shudder to think how RED it will be when I get it back. I’ve seen papers corrected by my advisor before. Pen arteries have pumped themselves dry on those pages. And always in his impossible to decipher chicken scratches that HE can’t even read sometimes!

At least this first draft is over and done with. But still. It is just a proposal. But Lisle being the perfectionist that he is, it is going to be a brutal uphill battle. But so be it. I guess at least I will be earning my degree.

At work, things progress. But not so well. My DNA samples are working for what I need, at least for the first step. I can amplify my gene of interest and make ooddles and oodles of copies of it. What I cannot do, is get that buggering piece of shit gene to sequence. I cannot figure out the why of it either. Perhaps I need to fiddle with it more? I really don’t know. It is highly frustrating. I had hoped to obtain my master’s degree in 18 months. At this rate, it’s going to be 2 and a half years or so.

Grrrr. At this rate, if I do go for my PhD…My gods…I’ll be over 30 years old by the time I get it. And then with post-doc work…cripes…I’ll probably be around 35 or so before I ever get  “real”  job.

That’s just depressing to me now. *sigh*

IKEA. Lesliele is going there. She invited me. If I go. I will spend A LOT. It is IKEA how can you NOT spend money? It just sucks money out of you like a mosquito sucking blood from your left tit.

But I could do Christmas shopping…and at such good prices.

Though, I must consider also Pixel. My roommate will be here with her, so that should be okay.

I must also consider work. If I continue cloning, I have to go in everyday (damn time dependent things). So…I guess we will see. But still! IKEA!

  • ikea or no ikea? that is the question…

  • Additional note

While at the North Market, I bought a new candle. It is called “Bondage” and it smells like leather. It is made of soy, and when you burn it, the soy oil doubles as pre-warmed massage oil. So, someday, I will be having a massage with oil that smells like “Bondage.”

  • Went to the vet, all kitties are vaccinated for the year.

Also went here. The Columbus North Market. As My roommate said “I didn’t think places like this existed in the midwest!”

It has a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. Mediteranean food, Indian food, authentic Gaelic food and fresh Italian pastas. Three bakeries.  A free range butcher and a game butcher. Bob the fish guy. Kick ass awesome ice cream…a guy who make soy oil candles…

If you’re ever in the area…go see it. It’s been around forever, I’d like to think it will always be around. There are always people there…I love to buy my produce there, I like to have my lunches there…I bought strawberry salsa today!

It’s not something I ever expected to exist in the Midwest.

  • well

    her name is officially Pixel

and she is officially FIV and FLV free

she gets all her shots tomorrow morning

  • Final survey:

This is the “new” short list of names that I like:

    Pixel
    Truffle
    Bella
    Callisto

  • She’s not PREGNANT! Yay! no babies!

However, now I am waiting until tomorrow for her FLV/FIV test results….

  • Poor Boots. She got a UTI from stress/holding urine too long. So she got to go to the vet yesterday morning. Hopefully she will be able to pee more than a drip again soon!

Truffle/Little Bit/Kit-Ten goes to the vet at 10am this morning. And Possum on Saturday. I am being a good kitty mom and getting everyone their vaccinations, even though it costs mucho dinero to do so. It would be too much if someone were to get ill, I don’t know that I could handle that with all the other stress in my life.

In other news, I finished the little girl cross-stitch and I put the first stitches into the new kitty one. I like this new one, aside from the fact that it is huge, because the cat in it is a silver tabby like my babies! Since starting up cross-stitching again, I’ve seen some weird kits online. You can cross-stitch just about anything but what is really neat are the photorealistic kits and the fine art kits. For example, Matisse’s “Blue Nude” is available for free from this site. It is also HUGE! Some of these look like so much work! But imagine being able to hang it on your wall.

    Ah well. I’m easily amused.

  • well

    I have a new baby.

    She needs a name.

She is small, fine boned and delicate. Black with yellow-yellow eyes. She has a very few small white hairs on her chest and a small white patch on her belly.

She is my new kitty. And I do not know what I will call her.

She is very sweet and very quiet. Not too shy, but not too forward.

I wish her name to fit in with my other babies. My others…they are Possum and Boots. So named because if you run their names together “Possum Boots” it sounds like Puss’ N Boots.

So. Cute names? So far, all I got is Rosie and Jigsaw. But they don’t quite fit….

    Anyone with ideas?
