Watership Down by Richard Adams.

It’s been my favorite since I was 12 years old or so and really, no book will likely ever touch it. By now, it is richly imbued with the power of childhood memories and road trips but even more than that, it is simply a well-written, highly-entertaining book. It has action, adventure, blood, magic and clever, witty characters that are well-shaped and likeable. It is, of all things, about a group of rabbits that flee their warren to avoid a coming plague and how they form a new warren on Watership Down. Of course, they sort of forgot to bring girl rabbits with them and that situation must be rectified. I remember, as a child, being shocked that they forgot about the girls!
