I have a friend. For her privacy, I think I will call her Bunny (since I’m looking at my bottle of chai with a bunny on it right now). I think most people have a friend like her. Nothing seems to ever slow her down, upset her, make her sad or destroy the cheerful world she faces the world. Everyone and everything is beautiful to her in some way and all is her friend.
For a long time, I was envious of this. I wanted to be happy, to not feel depressed or sad or to hate my very existence. I wanted to see the beauty of the smallest thing.
Then, about two years into my friendship with her, I suddenly saw what had been carefully hidden. A very depressed, angry, weeping side that she just always kept deep inside. Part of me was shocked, part of me was satisfied, thinking that deep down I’d always known it was true. No one could be that happy all the time.
And yet still, I wonder. Is it better to be like me, sad and angry often, but very happy every now and then? or to be able to just always be happy? Is it even really happiness? Or is it just pretending? I don’t know anyone who I think really can deal with the hurt of the world and still be that happy – I think she just ignores it, smashes it down and faces the world with a happy happy mask.

I have my first midterm of the quarter today. 3 weeks into the term, and I have a lack of studying – primarily because I don’t know what I have to study. 3 weeks – 8 lectures (MLK jr day lecture was cancelled), really doesn’t give much material, but 1/3 of my grade is based on tonight’s exam.
My advisor hates the American testing system – we test too much, too often. Evaluate, evaluate…teach to the test. I agreed with him prior to OSU and I agree more and more. It it no wonder I feel like I never learn anything when all I ever do is try to memorize and study for tests, not assimilate concepts (heh, good use of buzz words, eh?)
My lab partner, W. moved into my building. Right next door to me in fact. I told him about the availability (stupid me)…but this does make life decidedly more, er, frustrating. He gets on my nerves often enough in the course of a normal day. But with him living next door (and with that pesky hole connecting our apartments under our kitchen sinks!)…I’ll hear him all day. And his crappy music (gag me with Tool).

To move or not to move? My lease is halfway done. So, potentially, I could find a new, better apartment. One with two bedrooms. One with room for a couch, with space to have an office…one with better landlords!
But is it really worth the hassle? I mean, do I really need more than 350 sq feet of space to live in? (I took pictures via digital camera last week, soon I will attempt to post them in my profile pic). It isn’t big. But I find it adequate – most of the time. It’s just, my parents and the majority of my friends/family take the littleness of my apartment and lack of bedroom as a reason not to come visit. Granted, I only have a rollaway bed, but still…
